Negative Space Collaborative Art Project

My advanced art students finished a fun collaborative art project for their last assignment. We had a short amount of time to fill so I taught them some basic features of drawing with the procreate app. Inspired by artist Shamekh Bluwi they created a digital artwork with a missing piece. We posted all of the "templates" to a shared google drive folder and they had to select someone else's artwork to interact with. Here are some results.

The inner part of the butterfly was left clear for interaction

The sunglasses were the missing piece in this work

The crystal ball was left open for collaboration

A side mirror collaboration

This lesson was originally designed for students to do during the pandemic. The idea that they could still connect with their classmates while apart. It can be done without any technology by having students create a drawing and using an exacto knife to remove a section, as shown here:

Let me know if you try this lesson. Would love to collaborate with other schools next year. Lesson plan and student work packet available here.
