Week 8 Distance Learning

After a week of careful observation with our 7th choiceboard, we decided to go in the opposite direction for the last week of lessons. Week 8 focused on abstract portraits. We left the media and methods fairly open, with some suggestions on things that might work well. The results have been stunning.

We provided some artists of inspiration.

But the idea was for students to use all of the things they learned to create their portrait.

It's always fun to see the whole family getting involved. The patience of this dog as a brother and sister completed their homage to Yago Partal is nothing short of amazing.

It's always fun to see how students interpret the prompts and featured artists. Above is a Sandra Silberzweig inspired artwork.

This student blew me away with his Picasso inspired work.

Distance Learning Week 7

This week, our department's choiceboard theme was observation drawing.

We gave students the option to create one of the following

  • Draw the view from your window
  • Draw a favorite toy or favorite food
  • Draw a house in your neighborhood
  • Draw from a reference photo
  • Draw from a favorite storybook
  • Draw a self-portrait from a mirror

They were allowed to choose any media or technique.

 So impressed with their efforts.

Tomorrow I will be posting their last official choiceboard.

I've also been doing guided drawing in their classroom teachers' zoom meetings and on youtube live. This week's live drawing was an origami face changer and they did an awesome job.

Distance Learning Week 6

This week, we focused on illustrated messages for our choice board. The options included cards for Mother's Day, Essential Works or Window Signs to Display. Our video featured demonstrations of the following techniques or skills:

  • Making a card with a pop up or surprise inside
  • Block Lettering
  • Nature Prints
  • Paper Marbling
  • Nature Illustration
  • Digital / Electronic cards and videos
We also included the proper way to address an envelope and included the local hospital address for their "color out covid" program.

Here are some of the highlights this week

Distance Learning Week 5

This week we took on art history via our choiceboard.

We provided 12 images, but students were allowed to use other works if desired.
Our media options for recreating the masters included:
1. Fabric
2. Self-portraits (photos) with symbolic objects
3. Legos / Blocks
4. Food
5. Found objects/Collage
6. Drawing toys (magnadoodle, etch-a-sketch, spirograph, aquadoodle)

Some of my favorite works included students in costume with their families becoming the paintings.

Distance Learning Week 4

This week we are exploring with Paper, Pencils and Pixels. While many of my students may not have paint and other art supplies, every student in grade 3-5 was offered an ipad with procreate loaded onto it. Having a digital option for students each week ensures that these students can engage beyond a basic pencil and paper activity. It's only been two days and already some amazing results have been rolling in. Take a peek:

Our choiceboard this week included:
Cartooning

Hybrid animal drawing using switchzoo

This has clearly been a favorite across grade levels

Paper Airplane Challenge Inspired by Teach Outside the Box

Origami

Victor Nunez inspired doodles

Mask Making

Distance Learning Week 3

Week 3 we focused on unusual materials.

Our choices included

  • DIY paintbrushes and tools
  • DIY paint using food dye
  • Creating with found paper
  • Recycled Art
  • Marker Painting

Here are some of the amazing things my kids submitted. Unfortunately there were many amazing videos and works that include their faces that I can't share.

This is a collage with found paper

A monoprint with helmet drawn on top

A marker painting of the sad life of a marshmallow

A hamster habitat (Yes, there are hamsters in there)

A painting with found objects

And a melted crayon project, which was not on the choiceboard, but it was the 3rd thing this person submitted in one week, so he's in the clear.

Distance Learning Week 1

As a department our elementary art teachers decided to focus on a theme for each week. The first week for us was color. Using a choice board with the other specialists in our building we created 5 activities. We were allowed to have some be technology dependent but had to make sure there were paper pencil options. This is what our first week of choice looked like:

Since there are six teachers we each created a sample of a different activity. We made an intro video and one teacher compiled all five together. Our sixth teacher narrated a script that went along with some slides to review the vocabulary words.

So far I think I have about 80 responses. It's amazing how creative the responses are.

This student imagined if ROY G. BIV was a person, what he might look like:

This student made soap using the cool colors:

And this kindergarten student made a found object color wheel that included the tertiary colors:

A digital drawing

A lego rainbow

Origami Color Wheel

A primary color outfit sewn by the student

A tie-dye shirt in progress

Students in K-2 are using the Seesaw app and students in 3-5 are using google classroom. Please share the successes you are having with distance learning in the comments below or drop a link so I can follow you:
