High School Negative Space Art Lesson

Students in my Art 1 foundations class have been working their way through a variety of observational drawing techniques. Their current assignment was negative space drawing. Like the others, they began with some small skill builders to create confidence. Using provided photos, they focused on the negative space to create a variety of kitchen utensils.

Next they were encouraged to have a negative space scavenger hunt in their homes. They had to photograph five items and choose one for the project. We made our own viewfinders and discussed proportion. They were allowed to use cropping as a way to create more negative space.

Next they were challenged to draw the object's negative space and fill the area with pattern or texture. We limited media to colored pencil or pencil. I am so impressed with their results.

If you'd like to try this lesson and skip all the prep work, take a look here.
