Composition Lesson With Four Black Squares

Just wrapped our first week back. Students are in person five days a week this year. It's been great to have some continuity. This week my art 1 students rocked their 4 black squares challenge. We started with no instruction. Just six word prompts to illustrate with 4 black squares.

After the introduction to compositional strategies and the elements and principles, students were able to select a word which we posted to schoology for other class members to guess.

Our school switched LMS this year, so having two posts in the same class period allowed us to test different features of the application. We did our first round as a discussion and the final design as a media album.

This would be great for graphic design classes as a way to teach some of the basic tool functions. I added it to my composition lesson on TpT, so if you already own it, go grab a free upgrade.

What lesson did you use to kick off the year?
