Rabbity Painting Idea

I purchased the book Rabbityness by Jo Empson last summer and have been waiting for lesson inspiration to strike. I decided this would be a fun way to put some "Rabbit" art in the hallway this spring while dodging any religious topics. When you look at the cover and gorgeous illustrations it's easy to find immediate connections to the action paintings of Jackson Pollock. So that's where we went.

Week one, we read the story "Action Jackson" by Jan Greenberg and created action paintings. It was a great way to connect to science, talking about creating a vacuum to lift the paint with a straw and then using forced air to move the paint around. Students were not allowed to use a paintbrush. Popsicle sticks were used for dripping.

Both kindergarten and first graders did an awesome job. Can't wait to read Rabbityness next week and create the bunnies. Stay tuned!

If this sounds like just the thing for your classroom - you can download my lesson plan.
