Last year I tried something new at open house. I discreetly hung a sign with a list of items I needed for my classroom. Not art supplies, but the other things that you need, but don't want to waste your limited and precious budget on. Ya know...things like tissues. I had previously been pretty grumpy over classroom teachers getting all that stuff donated and I was putting it on my weekly shopping list. And you know what. Parents were happy to donate. It just never occurred to them that "Hey, my kid blows his nose in art class, too."
This year I'm paring down that list so that I really target the couple things that I really need. For me it's baby wipes, tissues, ziploc bags and disinfecting wipes. What I'm going to try this year is blasting my list on social media with the hopes that parents bring these items to open house with them. I'm also requesting they label items "art room" because I'm sure some kids have NO IDEA why mom packed a bunch of clorox wipes in their book bag and they just hand it over to their classroom teacher.
If you'd like some cute signs to politely ask for the items you're always buying you can find them here.
